I bought a 5 gallon buckett of hydraulic oil at costco for use in a friends 955, however, before using it I wanted to know if it would be compatable. When I looked at the label, I saw the number A3, i don't know if this helps Also does Napa Auto Parts sell compatable oil. Napa is only 15 minutes from my house and John Deere is over an hour. Thank You for any help you can give me

I think there's a good chance that hydraulic oil bought in an automotive store is jack oil. The TX/HYD oils used in most newer compacts with gear transmissions is pretty universal stuff, but I believe it is different than jack oil. HST's are more particular about what's in them I believe.
It's probably best to get oil that's speced for the tractor from a dealer, or at least make sure the oil is intended for use in combined transmission/hydraulic sump applications.

I got my tractor hyd. oil from the dealer the first time around. Since then I notice that the Walmart and the local auto parts store (VIP)carries a couple of different grades for tractors. Some of the containers carry specific manufacturers on the side of the 5 gallon bucket, others say Universal Hyd. Tractor Oil/Fluid. NAPA I believe also carries the same lubes and most of their products are fairly good quality, I wouldn't hesitate to use their product. I believe they carry a Valvoline Hyd. Fluid. Take Care. ....

I use a multi-season TX?HYD AGCO oil in my Ford, because the AGCO dealer is much closer than my NH dealer. The AGCO dealer is the same distance as the Wal-Mart and I'd much rather go into a tractor store than a box store so I don't mind if I pay a bit more.
I'm one of the people who do use something other than a manufacturer's speced oil, but I couldn't recommend anybody else do so. Whatever oil is used, it is important to know that it's intended for use in TX/HYD applications. I might be more particular if I had HST.

I would stick with JD recommended oil. The 955 has wet disk brakes, hydraulic pto clutch, as well as the hst - all of which need a high quality oil with additives designed for these features. ....

Per John Deere Operators Manual for 755/855/955 Tractor- Hydrostatic Drive Oil: Preferred=John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARD Transmission/Hydraulic oil, covers -40 to +122 farenheit. However, can also use SAE10W engine oil if they meet API Service classification CE or CD (good for -10 to +122 F), or Auto transmission fluid of Type M2C33F or M2C33G (-22 to +122 F), or oils meeting Military Specification MIL-L-46167A as arctic oil. NOTE: Artic oil is for use from -67 degrees to +14 F. If you're not going to use John Deere Low Viscosity, double check with your supplier to make sure it meets one of the listed specs. Note: Havoline Automatic Trans. Fluid Type F says it meets M2C33F ....

Just a question on JD Low Viscosity Hy-Gard:
Why is the oil totally colorless -- just like water???
When I check the dip-stick, a little yellow thing, in the front axle of my 4700, it's very hard to see the oil level.
For that matter, a question on the hardware inside the front wheel drive axle: Why did my 1070's axle require 80-90w, while the 4700 gets the watery Hy-Gard??? These two lubricants are so different in character.

I don't think the oil colour is uncommon. Both the NH and AGCO petro hydraulic oils I use are pretty much colourless--maybe slightly amber.
It took me awhile to get my mind around tractor oils when I first got my tractor. I was used to many years of engine oils go in engines and gear oil goes in things with gears. So I got my tractor and I'm using this watery oil to top up the reservoir. I think well, the same oil is used for the hydraulics so it makes sense that the oil should flow easily. Then, I found that the same oil is also used in the front axle, which has only gears. I found that strange, but I probably should have noticed that automatic transmissions have gears and also use thin fluid.
What I find even stranger is that apparently some tractor user manuals say that either gear or hydraulic oil can be used in the front axle. In addition I've heard that some old farm tractors used gear oil in their hydraulic systems. I still don't know how that one's supposed to work on cold days.
I've never heard exact answers to these questions. I guess a logical answer is that the main purpose of lubricants is to keep operating parts from overheating and both thin or thick oils will do that. There's also the possibility that gear and hydraulic oils on gear faces and at operating temperatures actually have similar viscosity.
